The Diversity of African Culture Research Proposal Examples

The tradition of arts and crafts in Africa dates back thousands of years and is still strong today. African arts and crafts commonly encompass mediums of woodcarvings, brass and leather. Wood is particularly popular among many African artists as it is versatile and easy to obtain. Also familiar outlets are sculpture, paintings, pottery and ceremonial and religious headgear and dress. African masks, for example, are part of ancient history and are important to many cultures, particularly in West Africa. In the majority of African art certain culturally significant themes appear. Popular examples include a woman with a child, a couple, a man with an animal or a weapon, and an outsider. The woman and child symbol reflects the yearning of African women to have children. An example of this is Gail Zavala’s painting Woman with Child. The couple may signify ancestors, a community founder, a married couple or twins. It is rare that a couple in art is depicting intimacy between a man and a woman. A man with an animal or a weapon can represent power and honour. An outsider could be an individual from another country or from another tribe. Generally, the more unclear the image of the stranger suggests a larger cultural or geographical distance of the stranger. I propose to use illustrations of African cultural symbols in my work. I wish to study examples of the different mediums popularly used in Africa, and relate their cultural representation to my project. I plan on researching a wide range of examples in order to demonstrate the cultural diversity within the African continent. My overall purpose is to create a set of posters for the African children’s charity, Abaana. I believe that using traditional African artistic techniques will result in a relevant and dignified work. Mrs. Matthews Juniors H. English November 02, 2012 The short story, â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher,† and the movie, the House of Usher, are two very unalike pieces of work. We will write a custom essay sample on The Differences in the Fall of the House of Usher and the House of Usher or any similar topic only for you Order Now The House of Usher is a poor representation of â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher,† for not staying true to the real production by Edgar Allan Poe. Although the movie has a few noticeable similarities, Hollywood loses the true value and the plot of the original short story. The House of Usher creates a whole new story, that takes the name of the story, but ruins the masterpiece already done by Poe. The Fall of the House of Usher,† is one of the popular horror stories written by Poe. And it’s remarkable plot, is lost in the production of the House of Usher . In the short story the plot is rather simple, Roderick and Madeline Usher are the last of the Ushers who are suffering from incurable diseases. Roderick suffers from â€Å"a morbid acuteness of the senses,† while Madeline suffers from â€Å".. a settled apathy, a gradual wasting away of the person, or frequent although transient affections of a partly cataleptical character.. This disease gives her a deathlike look, making her body lose its feeling, and loses consciousness. Madeline falls into her deathlike symptoms and is thought of as being dead. Roderick and his friend, carry her into the dungeon and keep her there in her coffin. Where she then awakens and frees herself. Covered in her own blood, she kills Roderick by being too frightened by the sight, and the unnamed narrator flees the house. Whereas in the House of Usher there are only a few of these events that take place. In both the movie and short story the Ushers have a incurable, unidentified disease in which dooms them to their horrible deaths. However, Roderick somehow believes he is being controlled by the house he lives in and believes he must do the same things his family has done and to die in the same house he lived in his whole life. Due to his disease, he hears every little noise, its like a piercing to his brain. The disease is mainly mental, and gets tormented by his fear, and predicts this fear will be the death of him. The producer of the House of Usher had to make the changes to the short story because he needed the people to understand the story from a different point of view, and to understand the meaning behind Poe’s story. Poe tried to connect The short story of sickness, horror and death Poe relates this story to his life from his mother(s) and wife who died from the incurable disease of tuberculosis, and connects it to the Ushers who cannot escape their deaths just like those How to cite The Differences in the Fall of the House of Usher and the House of Usher, Papers

The Better War Poet Rupert Brooke or Emily Dickinson free essay sample

And watch the moon, and the still-raging seas, And men, coming and going on the earth. The Soldier If I should die, think only this of me: That theres some corner of a foreign field That is for ever England. There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed; A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam, A body of Englands, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away, A pulse in the eternal mind, no less Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given; Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, In hearts at peace, under an English heaven. * Literary Critiques (The Soldier): 1. Brooke believed that his England was worthy of sacrifice. This patriotic element in â€Å"The Soldier† reflects the strong strain of nationalism existing throughout Western civilization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We will write a custom essay sample on The Better War Poet? Rupert Brooke or Emily Dickinson or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page As traditional religion had become more personal and individual, nationalism and patriotism had become the religion of the public community, and â€Å"The Soldier† reflects those passions.Brooke’s soldier — as Brooke himself — was eagerly willing to sacrifice everything, even his life, for the Eden of England. It struck a strong chord in the early days of World War I. By the end of the war in 1918, with ten million dead, other poets were striking other chords, less idealistic, less self-sacrificing, and less patriotic. 2. In the sestet of The Soldier, we learn why this sacrifice can be so willingly given. In spite of death, the original existence, the heart, of the soldier is not lost.It has merely been purified, all evil shed away, and now beats as pulse in the eternal mind. In this death, the soldier has found a way of bequeathing his possessionshis memories of his beloved Englandto future generations to enjoy. These are Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day; / And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, / In hearts at peace. 3. â€Å"The Soldier† is a sonnet of two stanzas: an octet of eight lines and a sestet of six lines. It is the last in a series of five sonnets composed shortly after the outbreak of World War I. The poems are linked by theme as well as form; all reflect idealism and optimism in the face of war, expressing the idea of release through self-sacrifice that many experienced with the coming of that war. â€Å"The Soldier† is about the probable death of a soldier, but the poem has little to do with dying. * War Poem of the 21st Century: That Day My Brother Went Away I cried my way through school that day, That day my brother went away. Days apart were no more than two, and even those were numbered few. He was my role model, Sturdy in the saddle.Nothing ever made him cry. The only thing that scared him was to fly. But as he boarded the plane and I wave goodbye, I saw a tear leak out his eye. He would be gone for so long, and he was so  very young. He said this was something he had to do, to go out and protect me and  you. So as he ensures our freedom, I am at home praying for him. He is a United States Marine, And I have more pride in him than you could ever dream. By: Stacy Williams * Compare and Contrast to â€Å"The Soldier†: The Soldier by Rupert Brooke and That Day My Brother WentAway by Stacy Williams both are war poems about soldiers leaving their homeland to fight in a war. Nationalism is easily seen in both pieces. Both soldiers felt proud for fighting for their country and neither of them felt scared. Moreover, there are no killings or deaths shown in both poems but it did not suggest warfare by any means. However, there are some differences between both pieces such as The Soldier is written about Rupert Brooke himself fighting for his beloved England while the other poem is the poet written about his brother leaving from the United States to fight in the Iraq War.Rupert Brooke wrote The Soldier in a formal tone and used a lot of imagery in it but the other poem is less formal and used rhyme at the end of every line. The Soldier has a theme of Brookes idealized society while the other poem is about the poet feeling proud of his brother and hoping him to come back safely. Emily Dickinson * Background Research on American Civil War: * The American Civil War (1861-1865) was a long and bloody war between the Southern States and the Northern States. * The Southern, or Confederate, States wanted to keep the right to own slaves. They did not want to change their old way of life, which depended on farming. The Northern, or Union, States wanted to put an end to slavery. And they believed that the changes brought about by new inventions and modern factories made their lives better. * The differences between the Northern and Southern states had existed for many years. Beginning in the mid-1800s, these differences began to cause big disagreements. * The Civil War started on April 12, 1861. On that day, Southern troops fired on Fort Sumter, a U. S. military post in Charleston, South Carolina.

Consumerism and consumptions are two terms used to describe the tendency in which individuals use a certain product. Influence is simply the ability to cause a change either positive or negative. According to Rebecca (2012), since its appearance into the global market in early 1970s, the consumption trend of Hello Kitty products has been on a constant rise. Since women are trendy, Hello Kitty served their psychological needs. Their stylish desires contributed to an increase in consumption of Kitty’s products that appeared in different designed cuties and exotic appeals to trigger women’s level of the product consumerism (Yano, 2009). This global fame makes Japanese women love to associate with the cartoon. Nature and culture of Japanese women The Kitty mania got support from the nature and culture of the Japanese women who are generally trendy. In women, Hello Kitty manoeuvred through the potentiality of the Japanese women culture of falling in love with fancy materials. Popularly known as â€Å"Kawaii†, is the degree of cuteness describing the Japanese culture (Kelly, 1986). This culture influences the shape in which manufactured materials like clothing, fo od, or even commercial goods appear. The culture greatly influences personal attributes and appearance. Wai-ming (2002) asserts that Japanese young women ranging from young teenage to adolescent and women in their late thirties are fond of liking fashion, and thus demonstrating their culture in products of every design. The music and drama industries are characterised by the use of such cartoon to attract fans from several parts of Japan. According to the culture, this cuteness is equally expected in both males and females. Sanrio ensured a positive relationship betw een the cartoon and customers, thus enhancing loyalty amongst consumers. Sun (2009) states, â€Å"This brand owns a group of loyal customers and so this Japanese company, Sanrio, receives wide support from those young women in Japan who prefer prettiness† (p.66). The company ensured that it enhanced corroborative techniques to substantiate with other companies that were wiling to design and improve products produced by Sanrio, the main company. The extension of Hello Kitty’s market into the United States was successful through Sanrio’s efforts. In fact, the company ensured that it produced goods that are friendly to most females to flavour the availability market influence of Hello Kitty. According to Sun (2009), the design around the image of Hello Kitty motivated the sense of concern and protection of these women. Music and Decors Music is a favourite element of almost everyone across the globe, with the taste depending on individual interest. Hello Kitty mana ged to capture the interest of several musicians who used the cartoon in their videos and live performance. Prominent musicians including Japanese culture musicians like Palmer and Yarckin used the cartoon in creating their popular Japanese cultural music like J-pop music and others. Since women love associating themselves with prominent people like music celebrities, this aspect played a significant role in influencing the consumption of Hello Kitty products. The Kitty products like band got prominence even in the late 1990s, as popular American artists like Marian Carey adopted Hello Kitty among their fashions. Therefore, as their music icons u sed Kitty products so do they got attracted. Several media techniques are used to pass messages regarding new products and fashions that are currently dominating the market. Hello Kitty was popular in Japanese media, which also played a significant role in spreading the Japanese culture. In this sense, TVs play an important role in spreading media information (Yano, 2009). Several television programs demonstrated Hello Kitty products that helped it obtain extensive fame. Wai-ming (2002) posits, â€Å"Compared with Japanese television dramas, fashions, movies, or J-pop, Japanese fancy merchandise like Hello Kitty is more subtle in conveying Japanese ideas and values† (p.16). Superstars acted programs that ran through the TVs and women want to associate with famous actors. There were video games, karaoke, and music programs that demonstrate d Hello Kitty products, which were on popular demand. This element influenced the structuring of women to greater heights. Difference Between Direct Method and Grammar Translation Method Essays

Difference Between Direct Method and Grammar Translation Method Essays Difference Between Direct Method and Grammar Translation Method Paper Difference Between Direct Method and Grammar Translation Method Paper Direct Method and Grammar Translation Method These are the two oldest methods for teaching foreign languages. Grammar Translation Method first appeared in the 18th century and was originally used for teaching old languages like Greek, Latin then failed in teaching communication skills. After that, the Direct Method was built with the attempts to overcome the weakness of the Grammar Translation Method. As a result of that, there are many differences between the principles of these two methods which will be summarized into three following main ones. Direct and grammar-translation method: advantages and disadvantages The first and foremost difference between the Direct Method and The Grammar Translation method is the goals of the teachers using them. In Grammar Translation Method, the teachers’ fundamental purpose is to help the students read and appreciate literature written in the target language. To be able to do this, students have to learn a lot about the grammar rules and vocabularies. On the contrary, the teachers who use the Direct Method intend that the students learn how to communicate in the target language. It is very important that the students are believed to think in the target language. In addition, due to the different teaching goals, there is a great disparity in teaching and learning process of the Grammar Translation Method and the Direct Method. In a typical Grammar Translation Method class, students are taught to translate from one language to another. They are also asked to memorize the native language equivalents for the target language vocabulary words. In contrast, the native language should not be used in the classroom. The students need to associate the meaning and the target language directly. To help the students to do this, the teacher demonstrates the meanings through pictures, realia, or pantomime. In other words, translation is never used in this type of class. Another obvious difference between the two methods is the dealing with grammar. Whereas grammar is taught deductively in the Grammar Translation Method, the Direct method uses an inductively way so the students are given examples and they figure out the rules or generalization from those examples. It might happen that the explicit grammar rule is never given. In Grammar Translation method, grammar rules are presented with examples. The students are asked to memorize those rules and then apply to other examples and exercises. To conclude, I can rightly say that both methods have advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to the teachers to choose or combine the methods according to their teaching situation so that their students will get the most benefit. In my own teaching context, I use the principles of the Direct Method more due to the needs of my students. I am teaching a class of international students who come from different countries and their native languages are different from mine. Therefore, translation is impossible. To make the meaning clear, I usually use pictures, realia, or pantomime. The target language is the mean of every communication taking place in the classroom. I believe that this very good environment for their language learning.

Place-names (linguistics) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Place-names (linguistics) - Essay Example Particularly in the case of England, the power of naming becomes a key insight into the history of conquest from foreign powers that the island has experienced in its long life. These conquerors understood the act of naming as the linguistic equivalent of driving a flag into the soil of the vanquished foe’s garden – a means of solidifying and extending the message of their invasion and subsequent occupation throughout time. Such is the power expressed through names and naming processes. As Rose-Redwood, Alderman and Azaryahu (2010, p. 454) note, â€Å"the naming of places is one of the primary means of attempting to construct clearly demarcated spatial identities†. For the purpose of the following essay, these spatial identities are to be thought of as political identities as well. â€Å"As a place-name becomes opaque and the original meaning is lost over time, the name comes to feel like a word, in that it feels like an arbitrary combination of sounds used to r efer to a certain item or idea† (Radding & Western 2010, p. 396). The same is true of a conquering force, as this essay will demonstrate. This essay argues that the study of place-names requires â€Å"a critical analysis of the social and political struggles over spatial inscription and related toponymic practices† (Rose-Redwood et al. 2010, p. 455). As such, the study of place-names becomes more informative about the past – about the role that naming played in the military, social and cultural history of England. However, what this essay will also demonstrate is that the social and political act of spatial inscription and place-naming still occurs in the present day, and still functions as a highly effective method for a conquering power to secure its presence over the emotional and psychological space of the invaded populace. This essay will compare the Norman Invasion of England of 1066 with the United States invasion of Iraq in 2003 to illustrate how the topo nymic practices continue to serve key political functions. Despite the thousand year gap between these two military campaigns, the core activity remains the same – rename the conquered space using conqueror language in order to cement physical power with linguistic power. This essay will also show how place-naming served a crucial political function even after the use of maps as a means of demarking political territory became widespread. Linguistic and toponymic practices have been used by invaders not only to stake a claim in the conquered lands and to demonstrate their ownership literally, the power of naming extends that power across the centuries, simply because the town or village will adopt the name, people will continue to use the name over and over, and as time passes, the name becomes part of the cultural vernacular and assimilates into the new order. As Radding & Western (2010, p. 395) explain, â€Å"names are given intentionally, to impart a certain meaning. They can be the converse of arbitrary. Yet, over time, people can fail to remember the original, specifically intended meaning and attribute other ones†. In addition, the act of saying the name repeatedly, over many centuries, continues to assert the dominance of the original source of the name. Thus the individual or group that claims the place via the name also lays claim to the psychological, social and cultural space of the invaded peoples, by leveraging the insidious and viral nature of language itself. As Rose-Redwood et al. (2010 p. 454) note, â€Å"

INTERPRETATION OF & ANALYSIS OF WORK-RELATED DATA Statistics Project

INTERPRETATION OF & ANALYSIS OF WORK-RELATED DATA - Statistics Project Example The interest rate has an effect on the structure of corporate debt. The overall corporate use of dept and the maturity of the debt are affected by the level of the nominal interest. Interest rates have real effects and this will result to inflation. The table suggests that the sampled period had 14.1 percentage points in the ration of the capital financed and the debt incurred. Raising the effective tax on the corporate income from minimum to maximum raised the financed debt by 11.3%. The controlled interest rates resulted to larger estimated effects of taxes on average. Tit rSt = Tit (r + ΔrSt ) = rTit + TitΔrSt. ΔrSt and Tit values are statistically independent. The estimated coefficient should be Tit= r. when ΔrSt together with Tit values are negatively correlated, coefficient Tit will be biased downwards due to the removed value. The table show a correlation between ΔrSt and it T is -0.37. the same results expected in column one which will symbol that the firm assets are longer term because more debt is used. Column two if the table shows the non parametric test, to show if the data is directed correlated to tax. The tax variable was interacted with ghost variables to show the level of the short term interest rate in that year. The results indicate the coefficient is positive. Years when the interest rate is below the quartile, the Tit rSt is replaced by rSt. The level of interest rate is 2%. The content of the table is excellent because it summarizes different variables that are the corporate debt, tax rates, interests/other variables and corporate assets. Interest and other yearly variables of the firm are using a 3 year Treasury bond rate and 3 month Treasury bill rate. It also indicates the calculated Dow Jones index. This is calculated by averaging the opening stock and closing price in each month averaged by monthly figures. The values of the firm GDP is also shown as a

Photography - Assignment Example Photograph 2-2 shows a picture of a bride. It talks about shooting wedding photographs like any other professional without having to retake the shots. It’s all about passion and then getting the right shot and having confidence in yourself. In photo 3-3, shooting on a tripod stand makes the camera still and steady. This provides a chance to capture tack-sharp shots. Therefore, the quality of the tripod comes a long way in ensuring one gets shots like a pro. In order to get those quality photos one has to invest much on the accessories that accompany any shooting. In photo 3-4, it’s not only about changing the camera settings, but also getting the right equipment and more so what the pros use. Photograph 4-2 shows a ball head, which is used to position a camera at any angle with one turn of the knob. Like a tripod, a good ball head comes with a price which is worth. Photo 5-2 describes how a release cable allows one to get a tack-sharp shot. The cable is attached to the camera and upon pressing of the button the photo is taken without necessarily pressing the shutter on the camera which would otherwise compromise the sharpness of your photos. Photo 5-3 details the B&H as trusted dealers in camera and all accessories because of their professional photographers who offer the best advice and have cheaper more quality products that meet a photographer’s needs perfectly. Another technique of getting a sharp photo, especially in the field is using â€Å"The Death Grip’. As depicted in photo 6, holding a camera with the strap twisted on one’s arm and wrapping it around the wrist gives extra stability and hence clear

The freedom of cyberspace

The freedom of cyberspace Discuss how the Internet, in its guise as ‘cyberspace’, has allowed its users to operate in a world that is seen by some people as being a new world of freedom and creative opportunities while others see it as a dumping ground for businesses and smut. IntroductionIn this essay I shall discuss how the Internet, in its guise as ‘cyberspace’, has allowed its users to operate in a world that is seen by some people as being a new world of freedom and creative opportunities while others see it as a dumping ground for businesses and smut. I shall introduce what cyberspace is and how it came to be, examine the main arguments for it being labelled as a creative tool that introduces freedom to the world, investigate the criticisms of those who champion cyberspace and analyse how both sets of arguments relate to ideas about technology, society and culture.   In my conclusion I hope to be able to offer an insight into whether cyberspace has developed into a powerful tool for creative freedom, or into a weapon in the arsenal of big business. CyberspaceThe term ‘cyberspace’ was first used by science-fiction writer William Gibson in his 1984 novel Neuromancer.   He described it is a futuristic computer network that people use by plugging their minds into it.   This term now refers to the Internet and lends a romantic image to a world where an almost limitless pool of information can be plucked from a network of computers and computer users around the world.   The Internet was originally developed for the US military but was recognised as the perfect system to transfer and share information for academic research.   The World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, with the first working system deployed in 1990, while he was working at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research).   The introduction of the World Wide Web allowed the public to access huge amounts of data and it has now become an accepted way to receive and send information.   The World Wide Web is just one service that the Internet provides; a layman’s analogy is of the Internet being the transportation of the World Wide Web’s content.   With cyberspace being made up of more than 100 million computers in more than 100 countries it is almost impossible to fathom how much information there is available to the user.   New Frontier   Cyberspace has been able to offer its users and its contributors a vast arena to ‘play’ with.   The rules and regulations of structured information providers such as the press do not apply to most of the content available online.   This affords the Internet a creative freedom that has never before been seen.   In an article in 2000, journalist Mary Flanagan stated that: â€Å"Technology allows us an alternate space within which we can invent unique methods of telling stories, forming identities, and remembering.†   This alternate space that Flanagan refers to is typifies the romantic view of cyberspace; it is a world in which a person can break free from the shackles of the everyday world and become someone different where they are able to enjoy the freedom of creating a new identity, a new work of art or even a conspiracy theory that they would not have imagined constructing in the ‘real world’.   Sherry Turkle describes th is as â€Å"People who live parallel lives on the screen are nevertheless bound by the desires, pain and mortality of their physical selves.   Virtual communities offer a dramatic new context in which to think about human identity in the age of the Internet†Ã‚   In her introduction to the reader author Rosanne Alluquere Stone reveals that â€Å"†¦engaging in social intercourse by means of communication technologies has given me increasing opportunities to watch others try on their own alternative personae†¦ there are some out at the margins who have always lived comfortably with the idea of floating identities, and inward from the margins there are a few who are beginning, just a bit, to question.†Ã‚   This questioning hints at the notion that under a veil of secrecy the truth can be surfaced without retribution.   Perhaps the most famous advocate of this was Oscar Wilde when he wrote: â€Å"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.† In this new frontier the Internet user can find information on any subject they wish to.   This information is not static like the printed words of a book found in a library, but it is â€Å"organic, open, ubiquitous and creative.†Ã‚   In the words of social commentator Annie Turner: â€Å"†¦it has turned into the eighth wonder of the world because it has not been regulated, because anyone can put up a website, because it can be all things to all people, because it has changed the way we work, are educated and play.†   The fact that content is not regulated attracts more people to it on a daily basis.   These new users can then become contributors by simple interaction; be it an acknowledgment of what they have read in a user forum (a dedicated area on the Internet where people can discuss any subject matter, originally called Bulletin Board Systems) to creating a brand new website dealing with the subject matter.   This process demonstrates the organic str ucture of the Internet and how it has become such an important source of information across the globe. The Internet allows freedom to share information and ideas.   The vast abyss that is cyberspace can be explored by almost anyone who has access to a modem and a computer (and more recently this can also include mobile phones, televisions and even refrigerators!)   People can add their thoughts and ideas to the Internet and these can then be shared amongst a mass audience.   This process of sharing ideas is the backbone of the Internet.   One of the contributing reasons for the popularity of cyberspace is the freedom to share knowledge with others.   This ideal has been argued against by groups that feel that the Internet should be regulated but a case for its defence can be traced back to the third US president Thomas Jefferson who wrote: â€Å"That ideas should be freely spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man and improvement of his condition seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature when she made them like fire, expansible over all space without lessening their density at any point, and, like the air, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation. Inventions, then, cannot in nature be a subject of property.†Ã‚   This was written almost 200 years ago and is still poignant today.   This freedom of information is the backbone of democracy (although it can be argued that this no longer exists in its truest from) and relates to the fluidity of the Internet. Another way in which cyberspace can be seen as a platform for creative expression is when it is used as a device to disclose information that would normally be guarded by political parties.   This ability to release information may be taken for granted in the West where tabloid headlines can seemingly uncover storylines that would be more suited in pulp fiction novels, but in suppressed countries such as Burma and China this medium has proved to be a tool to spread news that would never allowed to be broadcast by its governments.   It has been reported that China is the biggest abuser of Internet freedom.   The government has censored several hundred thousand websites and, according to Amnesty International, has jailed 61 people accused of using the Internet to spread anti-Communist propaganda.   An interesting fact is that Yahoo! (an American-based Internet company) has adapted its search engine to filter out content unpalatable to the Chinese government; subjects as inflamm atory as Taiwan independence and democracy will not be found on a network supplied in China.   In addition to this, Amnesty International has accused Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Cisco, Nortel and Websense of helping authorities track down people posting pro-democracy and other similarly subversive material online.   CriticismsThe main criticisms of those who champion cyberspace are based on the content of what can be found online.   Some argue that there are subjects that should not be disclosed to the population whilst others complain that the facts are diluted at best, and completely missing in some cases. In an article in the New Statesman, Andrew Brown reported that: â€Å"There are two general truths about attitudes to censoring the Internet. The first is that hardly anyone admits to favouring it in principle. The second is that whoever you are, and however libertarian, it should never take more than five minutes at the keyboard to find something you believe should be removed from the net, and its perpetrators locked up in a criminal lunatic asylum.†Ã‚   This view is hard to ignore as any Internet user can find themselves in a harem of unsuitable websites.   These sites could include pornography, neo-Nazism, torture, etc.   However, the freedom of cyberspace protects these sites just as it protects the rights of suppressed citizens to air their comments.   The content of a website should be approached in a subjective manner and a liberal pinch of salt should be taken with each sentence.   The most substantial argument against the freedom of cyberspace has always been about pornography.   Pornography is the biggest generator of traffic on the Internet and the latest trend of providing pornography direct to a mobile phone has witnessed commercial breaks on some mainstream digital television channels flooded with semi-naked women selling images directly to the customer.   This saturation has thrown up the argument that â€Å"†¦the freedom the internet potentially brings is more under threat from some grasping commercial companies who provide access to it than governments who seek to control that access.† This threat from big business shows a shift in power over how business and the Internet work in conjunction with each other.   It was suggested by Manuel Castells only three years ago that: â€Å"It would not be fanciful to say that the Internet transformed business as much, if not more, than business transformed the Internet.† It is not all about the simple exploitation of bodies that has brought objections to the way that the Internet works.   Because there are no real rules or regulations to conform to there will always be content that is considered to be so inaccurate that if it was released in the national press there would be an immediate libel case.   This lack of quality control can hinder the savviest Internet user when a trusted source has included information that may have been gathered from a secondary, unreliable source.   Such an inclusion will therefore render that piece as being factually incorrect.   This modern take of ‘Chinese Whispers’ has infected a large percentage of information to be found in cyberspace and as such its opponents’ views of it being an inappropriate use of knowledge can be appreciated, and their calls to regulate its content empathised with. Technology, Society CultureThe technology that is now available to the public has grown in a remarkable way since the early 1990’s and this has allowed access to the Internet for the masses (but it has still to reach the Third World nations).   Ã‚  Castells realised the link between technological breakthroughs and the Internet when he wrote that â€Å"The culture of the Internet is a culture made up of technocratic belief in the progress of humans through technology†¦Ã¢â‚¬    A growing concern, and one that has developed over the last twenty years, is that it is the younger generation that have accepted this technology and it is they who can fully appreciate the choice on offer.   The ‘establishment’, such as governments, are mainly run by people over the age of fifty.   Their grasp of new technology is repeatedly outdated and the fear of ‘losing touch’ with the youth is highlighted by the need to own a website in an attempt to speak t he same language.   However, this language is updated on a daily basis and miscommunication can lead to a lack of understanding on both sides.   In an attempt to stop this from happening it is not impossible to see governments, or leading businesses, curbing the development of technology to have more control over its destination. Society therefore drives the world of cyberspace.   It appears in its current state because that is how it has been formed by its users.   The information that is available has been posted into the realms of the Internet by people like us, for people like us.   Castells writes that: â€Å"Technological systems are socially produced.   Social production is culturally informed.   The Internet is no exception.   The culture of the producers of the Internet shaped the medium.†   This cultural development affords the Internet to continue growing with any facet available to those who want it.   It has allowed for an intellectual, utopian culture where it is up to the individual to determine what they want to see and what they choose to ignore.   This is a culture in society which can grow intellectually, but only if it recognises that not all they read is true.   It therefore begs the question whether or not a society can blossom if a main source of information i s not monitored to be accurate.   Donna Haraway writes about the ‘Network Theory’,a theory proposed in the 1970s by the Nobel Prize-winning immunologist Niels Jerne.   He hypothesised an immune system that was self-regulated.   Edward Golub explains that the network theory â€Å"Differs from other immunological thinking because it endows the immune system with the ability to regulate itself using only itself.† This theory can be viewed within the structure of the Internet where the organic nature of cyberspace is continuously updated and added to by its own infrastructure; its users and contributors. Conclusion  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Internet is a vast and powerful tool and as such it is there to be used or abused by anyone with access.   The arguments that the Internet should be regulated are important and should not be completely ignored.   The power that some governments and big business corporations have over the flow of information is very real and this is something that should be examined closely.   However, picking out certain aspects from cyberspace to be scrutinised will open a precedent for all content to be regulated.   This could then lead to a misuse of power and the freedom of creative input could draw to a halt.   Haraway expressed her concerns about this exploitation and the ways in which new technology can be hijacked for anti-social use: â€Å"The new communications technologies are fundamental to the eradication of ‘public life’ for everyone.   This facilitates the mushrooming of a permanent high-tech military establishment at the cul tural and economic expense of most people†¦Ã¢â‚¬ It is my belief that the ability to take on board information and decide whether to accept it on your own terms is far more important to personal and social development than being told what you can or cannot digest.   As such I believe that the World Wide Web, the Internet, cyberspace, or whatever moniker it falls under does constitute a new world of freedom and creative opportunities and the fact that it is not regulated by self-appointed censors should be applauded and defended.   In the words of Rosanna Stone: â€Å"In the space between [immense threat and immense promise] lies the path to our adventure at the dawn of the virtual age, the adventure which belongs to our time and which is ours alone.† Bibliography Brown, Andrew (1999) The Limits of Freedom – Censoring the Internet and Offensive Internet Sites New Statesman (12 February 1999 Issue)Burton, Graeme (2002) More than Meets the Eye (Third Edition) Arnold PublishingCastells, Manuel (2002) The Internet Galaxy: Reflections on the Internet, Business and Society Oxford University Press Clark, Robert (2005) Time to Curb Net Censorship Support Telecom Asia (January 2005 Issue)Curran, James (2000) Mass Media and Society Arnold Publishing Danson, Lawrence (1998) Wilde’s Intentions: The Artist in His Criticism Clarendon Press Flanagan, Mary (2000) Navigating the Narrative in Space: Gender and Spatiality in Virtual Worlds Art Journal (Fall Issue 2000)Golub, Edward S. The American Revolution: A War for Independence Essay -- American War o

The American Revolution was a war for independence. It was a war which was fought for equal rights and the freedom of a would be nation. It showed the pure courage and heart of the American colonists by pitting them against a much more powerful opponent. The British had the best army in the world, and the colonists were often just poor farmers armed with their hunting muskets. It was truly a case of David versus Goliath. The reasons, course, and outcome of the American Revolution provided the perfect scenario for achieving independence. The ideas behind the revolution came much earlier than 1776. They came from deep within the Enlightenment. Although there was not much support behind these ideas, it is important to note that they existed. Stress had been building in the colonies since the end of the Seven Years’ War. For the first time ever there was a standing British army in the colonies. The British had nearly doubled their national debt defending their colonies, and they felt it was time for the colonies to start contributing some money. The colonists were expected to care for the British soldiers in the colonies. They would feed, clothe, and house these soldiers. The soldiers were there for the soul purpose of tightening England's grip on her colony. Needless to say, this did not please the colonists very much. They had enjoyed freedom under a neglectful Britain in the early 1700’s. Now they face the possibility of losing all they had gained. The American Revolution was directly set off by continuous arguments over increased taxes. The first tax to come was in the form of the Navigation Acts. The Navigation Acts "were acts passed by the British Parliament to regulate colonial tra... ...ship and cunning diplomacy the colonists surprised the world and won their independence. The Missouri Compromise

Coming back to the beginning of the American history, when the United States consisted of only thirteen states, the representatives of the northern (lets call them as â€Å"free†) and southern (lets call them as â€Å"slave†) states had almost the equal rights in the Congress. Also, it should be pointed out that slavery problem didn’t arise during that period of time. However, the situation was completely changed, when the boundaries of United States approached to West. Both the northern and southern parts were worried about the advantages in the parliament, which, as it is known, was formed on the basic of the following principles: the members of House of Representatives and two deputies from each state – the Senate. In fact, just the Senate became the main reason of the â€Å"battle† between the North and South later. It should be emphasized that in the first half of the nineteenth century two main tendency or saying in other words two main ways of bourgeois development took place in the U.S.: one – in the North, other – in the South. So, the main questions of the second American Revolution were the following: Would the further development of capitalism in the U.S. be provided with a way of slavery destruction and would the victory of a free farmer over the slave-owning system take place in the future? Firstly, the main reason of mass contradictions and conflicts became customs tariffs. The point is that, the Northern bourgeoisie was interested in selling the production and therefore demanded high customs for the manufactured goods which were brought from abroad. Slave-holders didn’t support them. So, Legislative Assembly of the South Caroline state in 1832 demanded the complete cancellation of customs tariffs, threatening to disconnect from the U.S.A. The main its argument was so-called â€Å"nullification† doctrine, according to which, states can ignore the decisions of the federal authority if they didn’t correspond the constitution. It is clear, that such kind of explanation was very profitable for the separatism representatives, especially in the South of the country. In general, collisions of interests of industrial bourgeoisie and slave-owners led to the unavoidable conflict, which afterwards caused the civil war.   It is obvious that, the given conflict became the beginning of the very tense fight between the following economical systems:   strengthening bourgeois system and weakening slave-holding one.   On the background of the given fight, the political history of America at the period between the independence and civil wars was more visible. Also, at the beginning of the 19-th century various disagreements arose between the representatives of the following political parties: the party of federalists and the party of democrat-republicans. The first party was established by Hamilton. So, focusing on the huge bourgeoisie and successful planters, federalists didn’t want to support the democratization of the constitution. As to the Republican party, at the head of Jefferson, it was highly supported among the industrial bourgeoisie, small planters, farmers and craftspeople. The main purposes of the given party included: the development of bourgeois-democratic freedoms and restrictions of the huge planter’s activity. The beginning of the long conflict was considered to be raising a question on Missouri State. Coming back, we can see that when the territory of Missouri applied for admission to statehood, the Congress and the nation were confronted with a unique substantive question that had far-reaching implications both for the settlement and for the future political status of all the states that might be carved from the vast area acquired from France in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Nevertheless, despite all faced difficulties and problems Missouri managed to become a state in 1818   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  (Bartelby, 2006, p.1). However, the settlers from Missouri also wanted their state to be a slave state. So, the question: â€Å"Should slavery be allowed in the new state of Missouri?† was suggested to be the most important for the citizens of that state at that moment (Blaustein, 1968, p.16).   The fact that southern slaveholders had already migrated into the Missouri territory made the question more than academic. The Congressmen from the North did not want another slave state. Also, at the same time Maine asked to be admitted to the Union ( p.17 ).   The discussion on the given problem was very dangerous for the U.S. because it could lead to the split of the country into two enemy sides. Planters tried to create the special law, according to which, the state would have to receive slave status, however they faced mass protests from the delegates of free states. Nevertheless, the given conflict was finished by the Missouri Compromise in February of 1820. As a result, the new agreement was reached, according to which, Missouri had a slave status, but the new Maine State was simultaneously accepted to statehood as a free one. Also, the territory north of 36†² 30†² north latitude was considered to be free ( p.17 ). Afterwards, the act of March 6, 1820 took place, according to which, fugitive slaves could be apprehended north of the compromise line and returned to their owners. As the American history showed, Missouri Compromise was regarded to be the most long-lived, because no states applied for admission to the statehood of the U.S.A. during the next thirty years. Coming to the conclusion, we can say, that obviously the acceptance of free states undermined the positions of the slave-holders in the Senate. In fact, the Missouri Compromise managed only to suspend the open battle between two economical systems. Later, it was broken when the question, which was connected with the future of such states as California, New Mexico and Utah, was raised. In 1854 the dispute over two states Kansas and Nebraska, which were located north of   Ã‚  Ã‚  36†² 30†² north latitude touched upon the Missouri Compromise again. As the result, the 36 °30 ´ proviso held until 1854, when the Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise completely. References Bartelby, Inc. The compromises of 1820 and 1850. A Documentary History, 9, 16-19                         The Missouri Compromise Coming back to the beginning of the American history, when the United States consisted of only thirteen states, the representatives of the northern (lets call them as â€Å"free†) and southern (lets call them as â€Å"slave†) states had almost the equal rights in the Congress. Goyas Folly of the Carnival essays

Goya's Folly of the Carnival essays Francisco de Goya has been called the father of modern art. He believed that the concept of artwork overpowered the need to cater to a particular style. Near the latter years of his life, he was made deaf from an illness that resulted in a grim and satirical view on life. Within his piece Folly of the Carnival, all these characteristics become evident. Folly of the Carnival is an etching and aquatint carved sometime in the early 19th century. Although in black in white, the vivid colors of the figures costumes seem to pop out due to their detailed fabric and stylized poses. The pieced is bathed in a dark and gloomy atmosphere as onlookers in the background observe five men engaged in some sort of frenzy. An intense gaze between two figures moves us into the piece. With their eyes only inches apart, it creates a tension that can not be ignored. The background displays a dark and faded crowd staring as an audience at the spectacle before them. The viewer is then pulled in as one of those spectators. The figures in the fore ground are standing in almost a photographic snapshot pose. They are caught in the midst of an action. The two figures in the center are standing with feet together and legs bent with almost perfect symmetry. While two figures on the most left side seem to be pulling the man back or possibly grabbing each others backsides. The left edge is activated as the left most figure is poring into the scene. The man an the right side is standing with observation atop a casting shadow that moves to the left. He stands isolated either in pause or rest from the action. A cloaked figure walks inattentively away from the scene. His silhouette casting boldly from the sky. Almost like in a brawl or drunken rage, a man lay on his back covered in a shroud of darkness also blending in with the spectators as if knocked out and no longer belonging to the mischief at hand. Here consists no buildings or lines of...

Human Resource Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 2

Human Resource Management - Essay Example strategic way. It is focused on the management of the workforce in an organization and the provision of direction to them. The aim of the HRM is to deal with and solve all the problems, within the organization, that are related to the workforce. These include hiring and recruitment, performance management, appraisals, compensation and benefits, organizational development, communication, training, safety and well-being, employee motivation, administration and conflict resolution. HRM also deals with all the issues pertaining to corporate social responsibility. In addition to this, HRM serves as the only association that a company usually has with the trade union. More than anything else, Human Resource Management is a comprehensive as well as strategic approach of managing not only the employees but the entire workplace culture (Budhwar, 2000). Effective HRM is needed in order to ensure that employees contribute positively and effectively to the goals and objectives of the company. Th us HRM is extremely important if the organization wants to ensure that the employees do not go astray. It provides a policing arm to the organization. SIGNIFICANCE OF HRM It is a very important part of the organization and its significance can be judged from the fact that most organizations now have a separate Human Resource Management department, given that the organization is big enough to afford it. From being a low scale and low scope department, Human Resource Management has now become a strategic business partner of the organization since its function is to provide constant support to the vision and mission of the organization. This also because HRM aims to implement the business strategies and ensuring that they work. HRM is now believed to be the management of people in the organization, not employees. It is responsible for ensuring that the organization complies with the labor as well as employment laws. According to Cheddie (2001) the aim is to gain competitive advantage b y using a wide range of structural, personnel and cultural techniques. THEORIES AND PRACTICES As the discipline of HRM continues to grow and gain momentum across the globe, more theories and studies are being devoted to it. Most HRM theories and practices are directly drawn from the field of behavioral sciences as well as from theories related to strategic management (Som, 2008). For HRM to work effectively there are certain practices that the organization must adopt. Among the first theories on the HRM concept was proposed by the Michigan school. According to this theory, the HR system must be managed in a way so that it is in line with the organizational goals and strategies. This concept became very popular as the ‘matching model’. It was further developed that there is human resource cycle which comprises four functions. These are selection, performance appraisal, rewards and compensation and training and development. Delegation to Line Managers Budhwar and Khatri ( 2001) argue that in

Pros & Cons of School Principals changing schools every 3 years Assignment

Pros & Cons of School Principals changing schools every 3 years - Assignment Example ble information at one location and then upon moving within a period of 3 or so years, transmit that information plus whatever subject matter expertise they have learned at the prior location to the new posting (Wallace, 2009). Conversely, the biggest drawback to such an approach is the fact that many times principles are not on the ground long enough at the location to see the result of whatever changes they hoped to effect. With such a short time to engage the shareholders, it is not even possible for a principle to see the incoming freshman graduate from high school. This inability to realize many goals and see plans come to fruition is more than damaging due to the fact that it not only has an effect on the shareholders within the educational system but also on the outlook that the principle himself/herself engages. With the attitude that change is not even worth engaging due to the fact that they will never see the fruits of this, a very depressing and complacent attitude can be

Two questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Two questions - Essay Example There is a contract that exists between Standard Storage Company and Tri-county Investment Corporation of the transaction of the sale of the mentioned warehouse. The contract is quite clear in all its elements and further mentions clearly that there is a lot of silence about the office furniture. Therefore, any disagreement should never arise on whether office furniture is included in the sale as the contract goes ahead to mention that the document, which is the contract itself, supersedes any agreement made before or after the contract of sale. Hence, all the emails that the parties exchanged regarding the mention of the furniture as part of the sale are declared null and void, as this is not stated in the binding document that is the contract of sale. The contract of sale of goods demands that there be a detailed description of the goods or property being sold, their serial number and any other data applicable. Therefore, the seller is obligated to ensure that the goods or property they are selling is free from liens claims, encumbrances, or restrictions (Jentz, Clarkson, Miller and Cross 46). In a contract to sale, the must exists the following requisites to enable its execution. There must be an agreement between the parties that is one party must be willing to sell and the other willing to buy. Secondly, a consideration must exists of which in our case is the price consideration hence the price of the goods or the properties must be well stated. Of course it is a common phenomenon that the parties willing to engage in the contract to sale must have the required contractual capacity hence competence to enter the agreement. The purpose of the contract must be legal in nature hence ability to pass the test of the law incase of any disagreement and the apparent consent of both the parties must be genuine and not a pretence. Finally, the agreement must be in whatever form as required by law. If the above contract to sale satisfies

Recognizing Cultural Differences Essay Example for Free

Recognizing Cultural Differences Essay I have worked for Pizza Hut for a total of nine years. This company claims that they are considered an equal opportunity employer. They claim that they follow the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This means that they cannot and do not discriminate against their employees (current and potential) based on several things: race, gender, religion, or national origin. This commission was set into place on July 2, 1965. Several other protected classes were added later on. These include, age (if the person is over 40), disability, family history, military history, and most recently, sexual orientation (Wikipedia, 2012). Although Pizza Hut does recognize cultural differences amongst their employees as well as their customers, I have seen times where Pizza Hut has faltered. Recognizing Culturally Different Employees Pizza Hut does several things that recognize the cultural differences amongst their employees. The first is that we are closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving days. This not only allows us to spend time with our families, but it also allows us to celebrate the true meaning of these holidays. Our company does not have a Christmas party because we do not want to exclude anyone that does not celebrate these holidays. We do have a couple people who do not. We also have a couple of employees who have had to alter their uniform due to the beliefs that their culture believes in. There are some religions that believe that women should always be in an ankle length skirt. We do have one or two employees that are able to continue to honor this belief, even though our uniform includes black pants. My company also has a variety of different cultures working for us. We have African Americans, Hispanics, Pakistanis, Bulgarians, and whites. To be a part of a crew like this has made for a great educational experience for me and my other co-workers. I learn something new from these cultures almost every day. This company also recognizes the cultural differences amongst our customers. During the religious period, Lent, we offer specials on Fridays for those customers that do not eat meat on Fridays, per Lent. We do have customers that are vegetarian by choice or due to their culture. The way that we accommodate and recognize this is that we make sure that when these types of pizzas are ordered, we cut the pizzas with a clean knife and we change our gloves to make sure there is no cross-contamination. The best way that I have seen our company recognize the differences amongst our employees and our customers is that we take extra special care concerning people with disabilities. We have an employee that has severe attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. As a co-worker as well as a mentor to the new employees, I have set up different types of training modules in order to accommodate for different learning disabilities. This is one thing that I am really proud of. For our district, we have a binder that has different modules of training to help accommodate the employees that have certain learning disabilities. I have had to experience using the general training methods on people who have a hard time learning unless it is done a certain way. I used to get frustrated when they just did not seem to get it. By using the training kits and tools we have now, our company has helped to train employees of all types. Breach of Cultural Awareness As proud as I am to boast about all the good things that my company does to recognize cultural differences, there are some things that I have seen that make me ashamed to say that I work for them. It is not just Pizza Hut, but there are a lot of companies that say they do one thing but they actually do the complete opposite. For example, my store in particular states that we do not discriminate against anyone based on gender. The truth is my boss does to an extent. All members of management are male. Our entire dining room staff is women. To me, I feel like I am being discriminated against due to the fact that I am a woman. I have the qualifications as well as the knowledge to become a member of management. In fact, I have passed all the necessary tests and interviews, but my boss continues to make excuses as to why I have not been promoted yet. Another example of a breach in cultural awareness is one that makes me really ashamed to say I work for this boss. I have heard on several occasions that my boss does not like hiring African Americans. This is something that bothers me a lot because I think that prejudice and racism is completely uncalled for. Recently, we had an applicant come in for an interview and to take the assessment test. He passed the test better than most of our other employees. I was able to observe this interview and was complete appalled by what I saw. My boss did not really interview him like he did me when I got hired. He truly acted like he was not interested in anything that the applicant had to say. In fact, after the interview, my boss told me that he was not going to hire him. He said he was not qualified. I informed him that I thought he would have thought different had he actually listened to him during the interview. He finally told me what his reason was for not wanting to hire him. He said that he does not like to hire African Americans because they are lazy and he has had bad experiences with them as far as work is concerned. This comment angered me to a point where I almost quit because I did not want to work for a company that would allow this type of discrimination. I talked to my area coach about this. After this talk, the applicant was hired and has become an incredibly hard worker. He is actually one of our best. Both of these examples are inappropriate because not only are they against the law, but they are against any moral that I know or believe. It is wrong to discriminate against people for any reason. The classes the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission protect do not identify the type of worker you are. Just because I am a woman does not mean that I am not capable of running the store when my boss is not there. It does not mean that I do not know how to protect myself concerning my safety as well as my fellow employees. The skin color does not depict what type of worker that specific person is. My boss said he had a bad experience with that particular race. This does not mean that the entire race needs to be punished. Conclusion Just because a company says that they follow the law established by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission does not mean that they do. Of course, concerning rule book, they do. Just like case with Pizza Hut, there is always going to be some type of discrimination. Every company has the good things that they do to recognize the differences amongst their employees, but I also believe that there are going to be the blunders as well. Companies have been getting away with blunders for a long time. The blunders seem to be overshadowed by the recognition that the companies give.
